We can assume that the people around us communicate in the same way we do. If we do we will likely be left wanting. It may seem very basic but the next time you take offense to something someone says consider these two things.
1. Don't take it personal. We have been hearing that since our childhood days on the playground and it is still very good advice. People say all manner of things and when we are clear about who we are and who we are not, it is much easier to not take things personal. To paraphrase a great quote I heard once: "Take criticism or feedback seriously, but not personally.
2. Ask for clarification. Think of it this way. We only know what we said, we do not know what they heard. We have all had a conversation with someone and when they repeated back to us what they heard, it was nothing like what we said. Conversely when we are on the receiving end of information it is important to not assume we know what the person means but rather to ask for clarification.
Are these suggestions simplistic? Yes! Are they also true and useful? Yes!
